Συγγραφέας

Ο Σάμιουελ Λόνγκχορν Κλέμενς, που έγινε γνωστός σ' όλο τον κόσμο ως Μαρκ Τουέιν, γεννήθηκε το 1835 και μεγάλωσε στο παραποτάμιο λιμάνι Χάνιμπαλ, στο Μιζούρι. Σε ηλικία δώδεκα χρόνων εγκατέλειψε το σχολείο ψάχνοντας για δουλειά. Εργάστηκε ως καπετάνιος σε ατμόπλοιο, τυπογράφος, στρατιώτης, χρυσοθήρας, εργάτης ορυχείων και ανταποκριτής στις Δυτικές Πολιτείες. Οι εμπειρίες του τον πλούτισαν με μια βαθιά γνώση των ανθρώπων, καθώς και με την ικανότητα να χειρίζεται τις διαλέκτους τους και να κατανοεί τα έθιμά τους. Με το βιβλίο του "Ο περίφημος βάτραχος της Καλαβέρας" (1865) κέρδισε το ενδιαφέρον των συμπολιτών του και με το "Οι Αφελείς Ταξιδεύουν" ενίσχυσε τη φήμη του. Αλλά μόνο με το μυθιστόρημά του "Η Ζωή στο Μισισιπή" που έγραψε το 1883, και με τις "Περιπέτειες του Χάκλμπερι Φιν" το 1884, αναγνωρίστηκε ως ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους συγγραφείς της Αμερικής. Προς το τέλος της ζωής του, κυνηγημένος από προσωπικές δυσκολίες και οικονομικά προβλήματα, ο Τουέιν έχασε την αισιοδοξία του, με αποτέλεσμα μόνο οι ιστορίες "Ο άνθρωπος που διέφθειρε τον Χάντλμπουργκ" και "Ο μυστηριώδης ξένος" (που εκδόθηκε μετά το θάνατό του, το 1916) να είναι αντάξιες του μεγάλου ταλέντου του.
