O Edgar Lawrence Doctorow, αμερικανός συγγραφέας, γεννήθηκε στο Μπρονξ της Νέας Υόρκης στις 6 Ιανουαρίου 1931. Σπούδασε φιλοσοφία στο Kenyon College και συνέχισε τις σπουδές του στο Columbia University. Εργάστηκε στους εκδοτικούς οίκους "New American Library" και "Dial Press" από το 1959 μέχρι το 1969.
