Ο Philip Kerr (1956-2018) γεννήθηκε στο Εδιμβούργο. Σπούδασε νομικά και φιλοσοφία στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Μπέρμιγχαμ. Μετά την αποφοίτησή του, εργάστηκε αρχικά ως κειμενογράφος στη διαφημιστική εταιρεία Saatchi and Saatchi. Το 1989 άρχισε να συνεργάζεται ως αρθρογράφος με τις εφημερίδες "Sunday Times", "Evening Standard" και "New Statesman". Την ίδια χρονιά εξέδωσε το πρώτο του μυθιστόρημα με τον τίτλο "Οι βιολέτες του Μάρτη" ("The March Violets", Viking Press, ελλ. έκδ. Κέδρος, 2003), με ήρωα πάντα τον Μπέρνι Γκούντερ και με φόντο το μεσοπολεμικό και μεταπολεμικό Βερολίνο. Τα τρία αυτά μυθιστορήματα συγκεντρώθηκαν το 1993 σε έναν τόμο από την Penguin Press, με τον γενικό τίτλο "Berlin Noir" (ελλ. έκδ. "Η τριλογία του Βερολίνου", εκδ. Κέδρος, 2012). Πρόκειται για ένα από τα πιο δημοφιλή έργα της σύγχρονης λογοτεχνίας, όχι μόνο της αστυνομικής, που οδήγησε στην συμπερίληψη του Kerr στον κατάλογο "Best Young British Novelists" του περιοδικού Granta, το 1993. Ο Philip Kerr ήταν ρέκτης της Ιστορίας και ερευνητής πεδίου. Στα έργα του κατόρθωσε να ανασυνθέσει την ανθρωπογεωγραφία της περιόδου του Β’ Παγκοσμίου πολέμου με την ακρίβεια ιστορικού. Εκτός από τα μυθιστορήματα της σειράς με ήρωα τον Μπέρνι Γκούντερ, ο Philip Kerr έγραψε επίσης ανεξάρτητα μυθιστορήματα, έργα επιστημονικής φαντασίας, τρία ποδοσφαιρικά αστυνομικά μυθιστορήματα (με ήρωα τον προπονητή Σκοτ Μάνσον), καθώς και βιβλία παιδικής λογοτεχνίας. Ήταν παντρεμένος με τη συγγραφέα Jane Thynne και πατέρας τριών παιδιών. Έφυγε από τη ζωή μετά από μάχη με τον καρκίνο την Παρασκευή 23 Μαρτίου 2018, σε ηλικία 62 ετών.
Philip Kerr has written over thirty books of which the best-known are the internationally renowned and bestselling Bernie Gunther series. The sixth book in the series, If the Dead Rise Not, won the CWA Historical Dagger. His other works include several standalone thrillers, non-fiction and an acclaimed series for younger readers, The Children of the Lamp. Philip died in March 2018, days before the publication of his 13th Bernie Gunther thriller, Greeks Bearing Gifts. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature shortly before his death.
