THE MITH HISTORIC
Εκδότης Άγρα , ISBN 9789605054298
The works that comprise "The Myth-historic" are not in themselves a separate series. They have been painted during the course of four decades, and most form part of the ensembles called "Iconographies" (1988), "Bathers" (1990),"Landscapes" (1991 and 1994),"Twelve Paintings" (2004),"Palmyra Requiem" (2016),"Familiar Place - Familiar Time" (2017), and "36 x 36: Painting Essays" (2018). Five paintings are shown here for the first time.
All works, in general, stem from lived experiences. Subsequently, in the broader sense, they could be considered autobiographical. In the "Myth-historic", however, the autobiographical element declares itself more or less implicitly; like a thread running through time. Personal experience is interwoven with social and political events that shaped my life. The "inner" connects with the "outer", the "small" with the "large",the myth with "reality". Without nostalgia; in a way that's allusive, often allegorical and, most of all, associative.Through invented set-ups, different styles - some more and some less figurative - and, often, selected references to external painting stimuli, the images reveal a trace of history in my life.Through the act of painting, I process, intellectually and emotionally, my relationship with history as both its subject and its object. It is not my aim to make historical or political statements; nor to narrate in the terms of a novel, to imitate images that bear their own historicity, or to reproduce emotions connected to specific events. I draw from the present and the past to create personal myth-histories, potentially open to equally personal interpretations by their viewer. [...]
