MY GREEK ROOTS
Εκδότης Ιδιωτική Έκδοση , ISBN 9786180008692
For you who were born and are growing up in foreign lands, for you who travel around the world like we never imagined possible in our times, for you who also have Greek roots…
I feel proud, happy and privileged to be Greek. Because I live in a beautiful country, where I can feel its natural beauty with all my senses during the four seasons of the year. Because I am surrounded by the history and the culture that can give me the answers to my wonders. But most of all, because I speak the Greek language.
The one that Homer, Aeschylus and Plato spoke.
I was always enchanted by the richness and logic of the Greek words. The grammatical and syntactical order of a phrase.
For a long time, I have been amazed by the number of Greek words used in the English language. Studying in depth various English encyclopedias, I was astounded to discover that there are thousands of English words borrowed from the Greek vocabulary or derived from their roots. Most of them in the science area such as Medicine, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Philosophy, and so on.
Out of all these thousands, I picked a few words that are most commonly used in everyday life and could be more easily recognized by younger people.
And this is what I have aimed to do with this book: To arouse your interest with a rather intriguing first approach. To offer you a first glance into the magical formation of words.
I hope that, with your short journey through this book, you will share my love and enthusiasm for the Greek language, and you will see the beauty in it, too!
