Η Τζόαν Χάρις (πλήρες όνομα: Joanne Michele Sylvie Harris) γεννήθηκε το 1964 στο Barnsley του Γιορκσάιρ, με μικτή αγγλική και γαλλική καταγωγή. Σπούδασε σύγχρονες και μεσαιωνικές γλώσσες στο Κολέγιο του Barnsley και στο Κολέγιο St Catharine's του Κέιμπριτζ, και εργάστηκε, αρχικά, ως δασκάλα γαλλικών σε παιδιά του δημοτικού σχολείου. Τα δύο πρώτα της μυθιστορήματα, "The Evil Seed" ("Ο σατανικός σπόρος",1989), και "Sleep, Pale Sister" ("Κοιμήσου, χλωμή αδελφούλα", 1993, ελλ. έκδ. Το 2012 ανακηρύχθηκε από το περιοδικό "The Bookseller" και την εταιρεία Nielsen μέλος του "Millionnaire's Club", δηλ. του κλαμπ των συγγραφέων που οι πωλήσεις ενός βιβλίου τους ξεπέρασαν αποδεδειγμένα το 1 εκ. αντίτυπα στη Μ. Βρετανία -κάτι που είχαν καταφέρει, μέχρι αυτή την ημερομηνία, άλλες τρεις βρετανίδες συγγραφείς (η J.K. Rowling, με τα βιβλία του Χάρι Πότερ, η Helen Fielding με το "Ημερολόγιο της Μπρίτζετ Τζόουνς" και η Kate Mosse με τον "Λαβύρινθο").
JOANNE HARRIS is an Anglo-French author, whose books include fourteen novels, two cookbooks and many short stories. Her work is extremely diverse, covering aspects of magic realism, suspense, historical fiction, mythology and fantasy. In 2000, her 1999 novel CHOCOLAT was adapted to the screen, starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp. She is an honorary Fellow of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, and in 2013 was awarded an MBE by the Queen.
