Συγγραφέας

Ο Πήτερ Κάρεϋ γεννήθηκε στη Βικτώρια της Αυστραλίας το 1943. Σπούδασε θετικές επιστήμες, χωρίς όμως να πάρει πτυχίο. Εργάσθηκε για χρόνια σε διαφημιστικές εταιρείες. Εμφανίσθηκε στα γράμματα το 1974 με τη συλλογή διηγημάτων: "Ο χοντρός στην Ιστορία" (στα ελληνικά, από τις εκδόσεις Γνώση). Ακολούθησαν κι άλλες συλλογές διηγημάτων και τα μυθιστορήματα: "Bliss" (1981), "Illywhacker" (1985· υποψήφιο για το βραβείο Μπούκερ), "Όσκαρ και Λουσίντα" (1988· τιμήθηκε με το βραβείο Μπούκερ· στα ελληνικά από τις εκδόσεις Aquarius), "The tax inspector" (1991), "The unusual life of Tristan Smith" (1994), "Τζακ Μαγκς" (1997) και "True history of the Kelly Gang" (2001· τιμήθηκε και αυτό με το βραβείο Μπούκερ). Το 1994 κυκλοφόρησε το βιβλίο του "Collected stories" το οποίο περιλαμβάνει το σύνολο σχεδόν των διηγημάτων του. Το βιβλίο "Ο Παπαγάλος και ο Ολιβιέ στην Αμερική" περιλήφθηκε στη βραχεία λίστα των υποψηφίων τόσο για το βραβείο Commonwealth όσο και για το βραβείο Booker 2010. Ο Κάρει έχει τιμηθεί επανειλημμένα για το σύνολο του έργου του, είναι μέλος της Royal Society of Literature, της Αυστραλιανής Ακαδημίας Ανθρωπιστικών Σπουδών και της Αμερικάνικης Ακαδημίας Τεχνών και Επιστημών. Ζει στη Νέα Υόρκη και διδάσκει δημιουργική γραφή στο New York University.
