Η μητέρα μου ήταν ο φάρος της ζωής μου· ίσως γι' αυτό μου είναι πιο εύκολο να γράφω για γυναίκες. Εκείνη μου έδωσε, σε μια ηλικία που τα άλλα κοριτσάκια παίζουν με τις κούκλες, ένα τετράδιο για να καταγράφω τη ζωή, σπέρνοντας έτσι το σπόρο που τριάντα χρόνια αργότερα θα με έκανε να εισβάλω στη λογοτεχνία". Η Ιζαμπέλ Αλιέντε -ανιψιά του προέδρου της Χιλής Σαλβαδόρ Αλιέντε, που σκοτώθηκε στο πραξικόπημα του 1973 - γεννήθηκε το 1942, παντρεύτηκε δυο φορές και απέκτησε δυο παιδιά και δυο προγόνους. Δούλεψε ασταμάτητα από τα δεκαεπτά της χρόνια, πρώτα σαν δημιοσιογράφος και έπειτα σαν συγγραφέας. Η ίδια χαρακτηρίζει το έργο της "ρεαλιστική λογοτεχνία", επηρεασμένη τόσο από την απίστευτη παιδική της ηλικία, όσο κι από τους μαγικούς ανθρώπους και τα γεγονότα που πυροδότησαν τη φαντασία της. Εκτός από το συγγραφικό της έργο, ασχολείται ενεργά με την προάσπιση των ανθρώπινων δικαιωμάτων. Μετά τον θάνατο της κόρης της το 1992, ίδρυσε στη μνήμη της ένα ίδρυμα αφιερωμένο στην προστασία και χειραφέτηση των γυναικών και των παιδιών σε όλο τον κόσμο. Από το 1987 ζει μαζί με τον δεύτερο σύζυγό της και την οικογένειά τους στην Καλιφόρνια, αλλά, όπως δηλώνει, βρίσκεται πάντα με το ένα πόδι στην Καλιφόρνια και με το άλλο στη Χιλή. Isabel Allende was born in Lima, Peru, in 1942 and moved to Chile as a child. She was a journalist for many years before publishing her first novel, The House of the Spirits in 1982. She is the author of eight novels, including Ines of My Soul, Daughter of Fortune, and Portrait in Sepia. She has also written a collection of stories, four memoirs, and a trilogy of children's novels. Her books have been translated into more than twenty-seven languages and have become bestsellers across four continents. In 2004 she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Isabel Allende lives in California.
