The Women's Prize for Fiction 2024 has been announced

The Women's Prize for Fiction is the greatest celebration of female creativity in the world. One of the most prestigious literary awards in the UK, The Women’s Prize for Fiction was established in 1996 to counter the notoriously male-dominated shortlists of other literary prizes.

Winning novels such as On Beauty, The Song of Achilles, Half of a Yellow Sun and Hamnet have gone on to become modern classics, cementing the Women’s Prize for Fiction as a leading authority in contemporary writing.

The winner of the 29th Women’s Prize for Fiction is

Brotherless Night by V. V. Ganeshananthan

This beautifully written story follows Sashi, a sixteen-year-old aspiring doctor, growing up in Jaffna in the 1980s. Her close family is torn apart by the onset of civil war. Brotherless Night vividly and compassionately centres itself around erased and marginalised stories – Tamil women, students, teachers, ordinary civilians – exploring the moral nuances of violence and terrorism against a backdrop of oppression and exile.

Sixteen-year-old Sashi wants to become a doctor. But over the next decade, as a vicious civil war subsumes Sri Lanka, her dream takes her on a different path as she watches those around her, including her four beloved brothers and their best friend, get swept up in violent political ideologies and their consequences. She must ask herself: is it possible for anyone to move through life without doing harm?
